Why Words Are Important

Words matter. What you say, and how you say it, has the ability to influence days and lives. Words can bring life or they can bring death and destruction.

"Words" by Hawk Nelson describes exactly this. Words have the power to enslave, captivate, criminalize, and bring despair. Oppositely, words also have the power to transform people's lives. In words, there can be freedom and redemption. Words can bring hope in a world of hopelessness. They can bring peace in the midst of chaos and joy in the midst of sorrow.

Not only do the words we say to each other matter, but the language we use to speak to ourselves matters as well. I made a small mistake? Is my internal dialogue berating? Am I beating myself up, being my own worst critic, and harsh towards myself? Would I let someone else talk this way to my best friend or husband?

Instead of "making a mountain out of a mole hill" about tiny errors, what if we practiced self-compassion, positive self-talk, and thought stopping, by treating ourselves the way we would treat a friend or a child. I have found this to be helpful. I am more compassionate with myself and able to be less judgmental with my feelings. Something happened? "Hey, it's okay." "It's natural to feel this way." "It's not a big deal. Everything will be all right." I know it might seem silly to do this, but remembering to help myself is so important because if I am not built up, I can't build others up and be encouraging to them.

When I speak to myself in a kind manner, I feel like the Holy Spirit is within me, rejoicing over me with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). God is pleased with me. I never have to strive to do better or beat myself up for not performing a certain way, because He loves me just as I am. I am so grateful to have a Father who knows me and who chooses to love me, despite knowing me, my faults, shortcomings, and when I will mess up. He is a good, good Father, who delights in being able to comfort me in all of my needs.

I started this blog as a memoir to share some of my life stories with you. My goal is that these encourage and educate you on how to live a more joyful, healthier, full life; one of hope.
I write about my fascination with whole foods, my love of Jesus, my struggles, my childhood stories, my passion for education, and my devotion to creating a healthy life (body, mind, and spirit) for every person in the world.
